A history of painting in Italy, Umbria, Florence and Siena, from the second to the sixteenth century
A multi-volume scholarly survey of early Italian painting by Crowe and Cavalcaselle, re-edited by Langton Douglas and published by John Murray in London in 1908 for art historians, students and collectors. Halftone plates reproduce Sienese and Florentine panels and frescoes: gabled polyptychs with pinnacles and gold grounds, haloed saints in rows, and crowded narrative scenes useful for Gothic frame shapes and figure silhouettes.
