Journal of the Franklin Institute; devoted to science and the mechanic arts
A technical periodical issued from 1826 by the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, reporting patents, machinery, and experiments to engineers, manufacturers, and mechanics. The plates are small wood-engraved sectional diagrams: hatched cast-iron beam profiles, lever and shaft assemblies on ruled baselines, cylinder cutaways with centre lines and letter keys, all usable as line-hatch textures, engineering symbols, and figure-numbered labelling.
