Theory and practice of teaching art
Arthur Wesley Dow's art-teaching manual, issued in 1912 by Teachers College, Columbia University, for schoolteachers and design students learning composition through line, notan, and color. Illustrations are black-and-white woodcut-style exercises: flat two-tone landscapes, repeating rosette patterns, and banded borders of birds and stylized blossoms, useful as ready-made tiling motifs, silhouette studies, and rule-based layout diagrams.
