The apprentice, or First book for mechanics, machinists, and engineers
A beginner's manual of applied mechanics written by Oliver Byrne for apprentice machinists and engineers, published in New York by P. J. Cozans in 1860. The wood-engraved figures are lettered line diagrams: levers, inclined planes, balance beams and scaled rules, with weights and masonry rendered as cross-hatched blocks and forces marked by small feathered arrows — usable as geometric schematics, measurement marks and technical ornament.
