A history of painting in Italy; Umbria, Florence and Siena from the second to the sixteenth century
Crowe and Cavalcaselle's multi-volume survey of Italian painting from the second to the sixteenth century, revised by Robert Langton Douglas and S. Arthur Strong and issued by Scribner's in New York in 1903 for collectors, students and connoisseurs. The plates are halftone photographs of altarpieces and frescoes: Annunciations, Assumptions, Madonnas of Mercy, crowds of saints under arcades and cloud-borne cherubs, useful for figure groups, drapery and arched compositional frames.
