A two-volume scholarly survey of painting in Venice, Padua, Vicenza, Verona, Ferrara, Milan, Friuli and Brescia from the fourteenth to sixteenth centuries, written by Joseph Archer Crowe and Giovanni Battista Cavalcaselle and published by John Murray in London in 1871 for art historians and collectors. The plates are fine outline and lightly shaded engravings after Renaissance altarpieces, showing enthroned Madonnas, ranked saints, architectural niches and swagged garlands, useful for line work, drapery studies and ornamental borders.
