The book of chess: containing the rudiments of the game, and elementary analyses of the most popular openings
A chess instruction manual by H. R. Agnel, drawing on Howard Staunton's analyses, published by D. Appleton in New York in 1882 for amateur players learning openings and endgames. The 111 pictures are printed board diagrams: eight-by-eight grids with hatched dark squares and small outlined pieces in scattered positions, usable as grid patterns, game-piece silhouettes, and puzzle-style page ornaments.
