The open fireplace in all ages
A technical treatise on fireplace design and history by the Boston architect J. Pickering Putnam, published by Ticknor in 1886 for architects, builders and heating engineers. The 217 numbered figures are wood-engraved line drawings: mantel elevations, cutaway sections through flues and grates, hatched brick and stone masonry, and arrows tracing smoke and air currents, useful as diagram vocabulary, cross-section conventions and ornamental mantel profiles.
