The history of modern painting
Richard Muther's survey of European painting from the eighteenth century onward, issued in English translation by J. M. Dent in London and E. P. Dutton in New York in 1907 for students and general readers. The 280 plates are halftone reproductions of paintings alongside wood-engraved and outline-drawn copies: park fêtes with costumed figures, draped neoclassical figure groups, dark allegorical crowds, and intimate interior scenes usable as figure reference or tonal texture.
