A treatise on painting : In four parts ... The whole illustrated by examples from the Italian, Venetian, Flemish, and Dutch schools
A four-part instructional treatise on painting by the Scottish engraver John Burnet, published in London by James Carpenter in 1837 for art students and practising painters, using copied examples from Italian, Venetian, Flemish and Dutch pictures. The plates are etched line-and-hatch reductions of old master compositions, numbered as figures and grouped several to a sheet, showing crowd scenes, tavern interiors, nativities and ruins reduced to massed light and shade; useful for figure-group silhouettes, hatching textures and diagrammatic plate layouts.
