The art of the Italian renaissance; a handbook for students and travellers
An English translation by Walter Armstrong of Heinrich Wölfflin's survey of Italian High Renaissance painting and sculpture, issued in 1903 by Putnam in New York and Heinemann in London as a handbook for students and travellers. The 102 plates are coarse-screen halftones of works by Michelangelo, Raphael, Fra Bartolommeo and their contemporaries, reduced to blunt black-and-white with shadows collapsed into solid ink, useful for pyramidal figure groups, seated Madonnas, kneeling saints and a carved tondo frame of putti and foliage.
