Charles F. Lockhart's 1916 instruction manual for American locomotive firemen and engineers, issued by Norman W. Henley in New York as a study and reference text for men taking railroad service examinations. The plates are line-engraved sectional diagrams of brake valves, injectors, pumps and steam fittings, cut open to show internal chambers and passages with hatched metal walls, flow arrows and letter keys, printed as black line on tan stock; useful for hard-edged mechanical line work and labelled cutaway schematics.
