The principles of advertising arrangement
A 1912 instructional manual by Frank Alvah Parsons, published by the Prang Company for the Advertising Men's League of New York City to teach layout to working ad men. Its plates reduce advertisements to ruled grey blocks, rules and outlined panels showing mass, margin and balance, giving designers ready-made abstract page skeletons and hatched tone fields.
