Advertising and selling; principles of appeal and response
A 1913 textbook on advertising psychology by Columbia professor Harry L. Hollingworth, published by D. Appleton in New York and London for admen, salesmen, and students of the new applied psychology. The plates are halftone and line reproductions of contemporary magazine advertisements: a woman's head in an oval vignette, a girl at an upright piano, a mother and bare child for shaving soap, roses and children in California sunshine, all coarse-screened and set with fragments of ad copy that designers can lift as period trade-press texture.
