An encyclopaedia of architecture, historical, theoretical, & practical. New ed., rev., portions rewritten, and with additions by Wyatt Papworth
Joseph Gwilt's encyclopaedia of architecture, first issued in the 1840s and revised by Wyatt Angelicus Van Sandau Papworth for Longmans, Green in London in 1888, served architects, builders and students as a reference on history, theory and construction. The wood-engraved figures set into the text columns show buildings in elevation and perspective alongside plans and structural details, with fine parallel-line shading useful for borrowing Gothic facades, tracery and spires.
