Inside Out Library

The castellated and domestic architecture of Scotland, from the twelfth to the eighteenth century

MacGibbon, David, d. 1902, Ross, Thomas, 1839-1930 · 1887 · Edinburgh : D. Douglas · 564 pictures

A five-volume architectural survey of Scottish castles, tower houses and burgh dwellings compiled by Edinburgh architects David MacGibbon and Thomas Ross and published by David Douglas in 1887 for antiquaries, builders and students of Scottish building history. The plates are pen-and-ink elevations and street views with dense hatched shadow, plus small inset details of carved lintels, dated sundials and armorial panels, useful for crow-stepped gable silhouettes, masonry texture and vernacular stonework motifs.
