The castellated and domestic architecture of Scotland, from the twelfth to the eighteenth century
A multi-volume architectural survey of Scottish castles and houses by Edinburgh architects David MacGibbon and Thomas Ross, published by D. Douglas in 1887 for antiquarians, builders and students of national architecture. Pen-and-ink elevations of tower houses and ruins, drawn with hatched masonry and bare trees, sit alongside black-filled floor plans, dated lintel carvings and armorial panels that can be lifted as standalone silhouettes and ornaments.
